How To Get Better At Anything?

By

You can be talented or you can do the hard work. This only works if you are aiming to be good enough.

There seems to be no recipe to be the best. You need to be a mix of talent, luck and hardwork for this to be true. And in here luck plays a crucial role after your talent and hard work. Take Usain Bolt – he did the hardwork and has talent but so does the next 10 athletes who lose to him by 0.01 second. Someone had to be the number one so he became.

But if your goal is to finish the race, be good enough then there are many athletes who accomplished this with their hardwork and talent. If you are less in talent, then you need to do a lot of hardwork.

The goal is to do the thing daily and keep improving at it. Try different methods, try different trainings but give your 100 percent. Let’s take running marathon as an example. Your chance of being the best in the world is slim. And we aren’t aiming for that either. We are aiming for you to be able to run a marathon or half of it.

Because right now you can only run for 5 minutes. With training and putting in the reps, you will develop the ability to run for longer period of time.

Maybe you will end up running a full marathon. But thats not our aim. Our goal is to do better for ourselves. And with this mindset you can take on anything you want to be good at.

You have one life because what happens after death isn’t crystal clear. So you need to take all your chances in a reasonable manner in this lifetime.

At the age of 40, you may like to try some dancing. Sure go ahead and enroll yourself. Do the reps. Give 3 years of your life to the training, improving and getting a little bit better. The goal isn’t to be the best in the country. If it happens, then good. But we are looking for you to show some good enough moves at a party.

And in the day of Internet, getting better at anything is simply finding the support groups and resources on the Internet. From coding to hulahoops to drawing – you will find that there are so many people trying to help you.

So it all boils down to below:

  1. Believe that you can do some version of the thing you aspire to do
  2. Don’t pressure yourself if you aren’t the best or not in the top 100
  3. The goal is to learn something new, improve and have fun
  4. Maybe you don’t like something after trying it out – no worries, quit and find something else
  5. Put in the reps – 100 days, 1 year or 50 sessions before quitting. Chances are you willing improve by something by doing this
  6. Being better means better than your previous ability. We aren’t here to compare with others
  7. This will help you find new social friends and bring joy in your life
  8. Don’t put an age bar on yourself for skills unless the instructor advises against it
  9. Go with the flow. Plan for 1 new thing to try every year
  10. Relax, it’s all okay. If you don’t care how people see you, you will have more fun

Now go and enroll for something you have been putting off. Put in the reps. And then show off.
